How to View Voice Over Recording Markers/Slates on a WAV file in FCP 6??
on Aug 3, 2012 at 2:17:17 pm

I recorded voice over with a professional yesterday. He did the recording in his home. We live in different states so we were on the phone together so I could direct him as we went through the script. The entire time we were recording, we made several notes, 38 to be exact, of all the takes that he did. I assumed I would get 38 separate files labelled correctly. Or, get one file but with a log sheet with time codes. Or, I am wondering if there is something embedded into the wav file that has visual markers or slates. Does this exist? If so, how do I view it in FCP 6? Sorry for the long story but I felt like I needed to explain since I wasn't sure exactly what questions to ask.

To sum things up:

-I have a very long wav file with 38 takes from voice over talent.
-Talent was taking notes the entire time for all of the takes he did.
-Is it possible he created markers within the file for each take?
-If so, how do I view these markers using FCP 6 to edit?

Thank You so much for your help!! I really appreciate it!

From within FCP you can export a xml of an audio file with markers and re-import it into another project with the markers intact.

I am not aware of a audio recording application that can embed this info in a wav and have it read by FCP.

I have never gotten separate files from a remote VO session or any TC notes. I just get sent everything recorded. I would ask the talent to send you any notes they may have made.

When we do this the producer(or person directing the VO) is responsible for keeping track of the good takes. The producer will then tell the editor that take 17, part of 19 and the last part of 33 are the ones to use.
Did the VO talent slate the takes?

i think you need to talk with the talent.
get the notes scanned and sent to you.

simple answer is NO, markers do not travel with the file / clip.
even FCP exports with chapter markers do not have those marks when brought back into FCP
(stupid, i know, when you can see those markers in QuickTime!)

and who knows what software your talent was using?
well, they do,
so back to the first point. get in touch with them
