Editing canon 550d 1280x720 50fps
on Jul 29, 2012 at 11:12:11 am

I filmed some interviews with my canon 550D on 1280x720 50fps as a friend had told me this is best, (dont know why I listened) anyways I am now trying to edit it on my FCP 6, but I am unsure of what are the right sequence settings for this as my FC does not prompt me to sequence settings to match my footage like it used to, I have tried everything to enable that setting but it simply wont work.

At first I changed all my footage to apple pro ress but this made it look shitty and pixelated so I will rather edit with the original uncompressed footage.

So I PLEASE urge you to help me in figuring out what sequence preset to use as it is asking me to choose one, all the ones I have tried do not have the option for 50fps editing and now I am desperate!

Well, the original footage from a 550d is NOT uncompressed. It's highly compressed and in a codec with is unsuitable for editing.

I would convert it to ProRes, and if it looks shitty and pixellated when you do that I suggest you look very carefully at the conversion settings as that shouldn't happen.

It's also possible that ProRes might look shitty on the timeline if the timeline codec setting is something unsuitable and it needs rendering to display properly (although the answer for that is to correct the timeline settings rather than to render).

is it correct to have:

frame size: 1280x720
pixel aspect radio: square
editing timebase: 50
compressor: apple pro res 422

(my footage is not proress HQ but simple PRoress 422 I have done a HQ formating too but now for unkown reason FCP wont let me do a new sequence with 50fps editing timebase, i dont understand why :(

FCP 6 doesn't do ProRes HQ, only SQ (which is just plain ProRes) and LT.

Hi,

Your settings are fine:

frame size: 1280x720
pixel aspect radio: square
editing timebase: 50
compressor: apple pro res 422

How are you converting your footage to ProRes?

You can choose 25fps as your editing timebase. This is not ideal as 50fps is usually shot for slo-motion footage post conform, but you'll have to make do and tweak your audio (if it was recorded separately) when it appears to drift off sync.

ProRes LT is fine for most DSLR footage. Make sure your Render Codec and Sequence codec are the same. If after doing this, your footage still appears substandard and pixellated, check your RT settings.

Sandeep.

Thanks for your post.

I am using MPG Streamclip to change my footage to prores.
My sequence settings and my RT are all good so I still dont understand why my footage looks pixelated when the original doest. I have already edited all on 50fps do you suggest I change the sequence settings to 25fps or export the film from FCP as quicktime film with 25fps? wont either of those things mess up even more my footage?
The audio I recorded separately so there is no problem there...

750p50 is only nice when you're playing back in 50P.

Which is currently not the case on TV, DVD, Youtube, VIMEO.

50P is great for creating nice slowmo's when conforming to 25P

So basicly your friend doesn't know what he's talking about.

[Drea Davila] "

That´s correct.

[Phil Balsdon] "FCP 6 doesn't do ProRes HQ, only SQ (which is just plain ProRes) and LT."

Sorry but that is wrong.
FC.6 supports Prores SQ and HQ.
Prores Proxy, LT and 444 were added in FCS3 (FCP 7).
