FINACL CUT PRO interpreting the footage as PAL instead of NTSC
on Jul 13, 2012 at 10:52:26 pm

Dear all!
I have this "new thing" that FC decided to do..I didn't change the settings of my sequence..so not sure why this is happening, but:

When I import footage it's directly interpreting as PAL-CCIR 601, so every time I import I have to switch the aspect ratio to "square" in my project window (in order to see footage with correct aspect ratio in my sequence). Sequence settings are at "custom" aspect ratio. I have my audio/video settings to NTSC.

Is there anything I am missing? any presets I am not seeing somewhere in FC I have to change? It never happened to me before...

Thank you!
Esther.

Why doyou take square pixels as normal for NTSC?
(NTSC does not have square pixesls...)
If you are in HD 29.97, then you can have square pixels if the footage is 1920x1080.

What are these clips you got, did you shoot them yourself?
Could it be they are in fact Pal SD clips?

Hello Bouke! thanks for the reply,

my clips are HD @24FPS, sequence frame size is set up right now at 1024X576 (half of original footage, which is 2048 HD.
We want it set up as square pixels as is how it was set up at the beginning of the project, and it was always NTSC...but@24fps.

If it was recognizing NTSC before, why should it be recognizing PAL now?

This makes no sense at all...
If the clips are 24, it's 24, that's neither Pal (read 25) nor ntsc (read, 29.97)
I'm not sure how FCP interprets things (AE has user customizalbe rules for that.)
1024 x 576 is the square pixel equivalent of PAL sd widescreen
(720 x 576, the math is, 576 / 4 * 16 = 1024)

But if it used to work, what has changed?

What does the timecode do? Does it run up to 23 (24 fps), 24 (25 fps) or 29 (29.97 fps, could be 24 with pulldown added) ?

oops, make that:
576 / 9 * 16 = 1024

i see...if 1024X576 is PAL widescreen...this is why is interpreting PAL maybe.. I upgraded final cut in between and that's why maybe we got the change...and you are right, 24 is not either PAL or NTSC...anyway, i just have to tell FC all the time that is not PAL but square pixels, I guess will keep doing research though...but your math made sense and I didn't know 1024X576 is equivalent to PAL SD widescreen! that answers why FC is telling me this...

Thanks Bouke!
