FCP problems with EX3 footage
on Jun 30, 2012 at 1:30:59 pm

Hello,

I have just bought a new Sony EX3 and have two issues/questions which I really need help with please:

SYSTEM SETUP
- running FCP 6.0.6
- camera Sony EX3
- Mac OS 10.5.8
- Mac PowerMac 2x2.8 quad-core Intel Xeon
- 4 GB ram

PROJECT in FCP:
- 1920 x 1080
- HDTV 1080i(16:9)
- compressor H.264

------------------------
QUESTION 1 - IMPORT CLIPS INTO FCP:
Currently I am:
- copying EX3 MP4 files onto hard drives via Sony SxS card reader
- converting to import files into FCP using 'Wondershare' application (into FCP H.264 MP4)
- importing into FCP via file import

Is there a better workflow here?
Can I change camera settings so it creates ready to import into FCP files?
Do I need to upgrade my FCP to newer version to achieve better workflow?

---------------------------

QUESTION 2 - STRANGE STOP FRAMES on FCP timeline
I have had a few small issues with 'Wondershare' converted footage (strange 6 track audio files, application freezes) which I have managed to work around. But the biggest strangest one is when you preview the timeline:

- when a cut is reached we get a strange 'freeze frame' on the clip we are cutting from exactly at the cut point
- this happens when clips are on the same track at cut point and when clips are on different tracks
- this also happens when finished edit is exported to quicktime mov and when previewed by print to video

I have checked:
- all clips are same size (1920 x 1080, 25fps and H.264 compressor
- I have changed data rates on all clips from 3.6mb/sec to 1.2MB/sec and still get same issue

I'm really stumped by this one and need to get a edit out in a few days.

Any advice greatly appreciated,

All the best

paul

[paul whitby] "PROJECT in FCP:

"

Why you have "Compressor H264", if you are editing EX-1 footage?
No sense.
Set native EX-1 or Prores.
The second one will be the best option if your sequence needs to be rendered.

[paul whitby] "QUESTION 1 - IMPORT CLIPS INTO FCP:

Wrong and media degrading method (now i understand why your sequence compressor is h264).
You need to install the SONY Transfer tool that will rewrap the MP4 as editable QT files.
Install the SONY Clip Browser application too.

H264 is not a production codec and is not supported by FC.
You need to learn a bit about tapeless workflows in FC, Have a look to this tutorial;

Yeah, there's nothing RIGHT about your workflow. Either use my Log and Transfer method, or use the Sony XDCAM TRANSFER UTILITY to convert the files to XDCAM Quicktime for use in FCP.

Hello Rafael,

Thanks for response, really helpful.

Watched all workflow vids and now know the error of my ways.

I guess I have to upgrade to FCP 7 from my current 6 to get this plugin to work.

Currently running Studio 2 so I guess best to upgrade the lot as I can't seem to find a FCP 6-7 upgrade.

Thanks again

Paul

No need for FCP.7 for editing EX stuff although is very convenient.
