720 60p stutters on export to QT
on Jun 27, 2012 at 7:08:56 pm

Good afternoon,

I am editing a project shot DVCPROHD 720 60p. It includes aerials, jib and tripod shots. Playing the timeline out to my Panasonic broadcast monitor via SDI- it looks great. Smooth as silk. Upon exporting it to h.264 for client review- the shots with movement are stuttering. These are not fast moves- they are graceful and slow.

I have tried every means of export including:
export>current settings>compressor to h.264
export>quicktime conversion>h.264

I've even export to QT through my Kona 3 card- but to no avail.

I'm editing on Final Cut 6.0.6.

Any suggestions as to the problem? Again, the timeline looks great on my 26" Panasonic monitor via SDI.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

What's the frame rate of the exported file? I don't think exported H.264s meant for delivery do 60fps.

Checking item properties indicates:

1280x720
H.264
59.94

Which data rate and key-frames did you set?

Rafael,

Thanks for chiming in on this issue.

Data rate was 5000kbps and keyframes where every 60.

[Jim Carswell] "Data rate was 5000kbps and keyframes where every 60."
hi jim,
I would recommend you to limit the data rate, as you've don, but leave the Key-frames AUTO.
The point of a multi-pass compression is to set the amount of key-frames needed up to the nature of the picture. If you limit the key-frames and the data rate, the multi-pass makes no much sense.
Key frames every 60 frames means 60 frames GOPs which are too long to ensure good quality compression (DVDs MPEG-2 are 15 frames GOP for NTSC and 12 frames GOP for PAL), although I'm not sure this should be a factor on your stuttering issue.
try setting AUTO, that won't increase the data rate.
5000Kbps is a data rate that shouldn't cause this issue even on a low performing computer.

I will give your suggestions a try.

In an attempt to alleviate the problem- I converted all of my video to ProRes, re-edited the piece, exported a QUICKTIME movie and then took that into Compressor to create an H.264 file.

That worked. Why? I'm not sure.
