How to stop Jiteer while slowing the speed of footage?
on Jun 25, 2012 at 2:47:22 am

Hi Guys

I need a help from all. I get a lot of footage from 5d Mark 2 & Sony EX3, when i try to slow down any footage's speed by decreasing the value like 50or 60% I get a lot of jitter in the footage which gives a blurry kind of frame blending look in the footage.

How do i get rid of this problem, what kind of technique or plugin i use in final cut pro to solve this problem...

Turn off frame blending.

But know it isn't going to be really smooth unless you shoot a high frame rate, like 60fps or more. Or with the aid of software plugins like Twixtor.

If you shot 24fps...that's 24 frames in one second. Slow that 50%, and that's now 12 frames being played per second...and each frame stays on screen longer, so it will jitter. Smooth slow motion requires shooting higher frame rates. 60fps...slow that down to 30fps or 24fps...it's smooth. The less FPS you shoot, the worse the slow motion will look.

And I mentioned TWIXTOR as a plugin to aid in this.

You can try exporting each clip into motion, and using optical flow when slowing down the footage. Depending on the motion you can definitely get good results.

Do not "send to motion" as it will want to interpolate you entire source clip.
