Anyone used FCP 7 with Retina Display Macbook Pro ?
on Jun 24, 2012 at 5:36:06 pm

Hi there
I am one of the many editor that won't be moving to FCPX and sticking with FCP 7 for the time being.
My question is has anyone used FCP 7 with the new Retina Macbook Pros ?
I'm basically looking to see it FCP 7 is useable on the retina display to help me to decide to buy one or not....My current Macbook Pro is nearly 4 years old and crying for an update but there a few concerns with the new model
1. Screen resolution is actually lower running FCP 7 and other software that isn't optimised for retina display?
2. No Firewire ports
3. No audio input

Any help really appreciated

Screen resolution would make FCP 7's text pretty small is the only problem I could see with it. Remember you can enlarge the clip's text in the browser and timeline windows though.

FW ports can be added via the Thunderbolt port... There's a slew of solutions for this starting with a 30 dollar adapter... Both Belkin and Matrox have products to expand out ports for a TB connection so that's the solution for FW anyway.

Hi Paul,

I saw your post on the LAFCPUG and thought I'd reply to you here as well.

I haven't tried it yet, but one of the developers working on the WineSkin project (they port windows apps to work on a Mac) has a Retina MacbookPro. He wrote a simple script which runs the retina display at native pixel for pixel resolution (a full 2880x1800!). If I could get my hands on a RDMBP I would try this with FCP7 instantly. The resolution can easily be set back to retina defaults by simply opening the display preferences.

I think the only drawback of native pixel will be small text and menu bars. But if you are familiar with a Mac's accessibility options (magnify/zoom) it shouldn't be a big deal to hold a key combo to read tiny text. I do wonder how minuscule the timeline, button bars, etc, will look.

Here's the link:

If anyone finds this useful, please reply with your experience. I'd love to know how this works in practice.

Thanks,

~j!

Hi all

I got my RMBP yesterday, and will be testing it on fcp7 today. I'll report back, but after playing today I'd have to say I'm not concerned. The display options either allow me to have a pixel doubled 1440x900 res (which I think is too small for FCP) or scaled higher resolutions (pixel count not given) where the highest looks like the 1920x1200 display used on my old 17" Mbp. These also look pin sharp (ie not how you'd expect scaled resolution to be when scaling down on a monitor). So I think you'll just select the size you're comfortable with...

I also have the wine skin hack. It's fun, but text is TINY! I'll post a screen shot of FCP7 for lols.

Ben

Thanks all for the advise and very interested to see how you get on with FCP 7 on the Retina Ben.
At the moment I'm 90% sure I will be better off getting a new non retina MBP if I plan to stay on Final Cut Studio for a while longer
Looking forward to your results before I decide which new MBP to buy...

I will start a new thread above in response to this, so it doesn't get buried. I have to go out shortly, so it will probably be a few hours before I can post a full description of this - but stay tuned. I will say I've used FCP7 on the rMBP and it works fine - with a couple of small caveats. More to follow.

I'll add a link to the new thread here when the post is up.

Hi Ben
Just to thank you again for your review on running FCP 7 on a Retina MBP.
I took delivery of mine on Saturday and love it.
Had a quick look at FCP 7 and I agree with your review, not a problem at all apart from a bit of edging on the menu text....Of course I will be moving on from FCP 7 at some stage which is why the Retina Display was a no brainer !
Also got it from Jigsaw 24 ( who I'd completely forgotten about to be honest but still had an account ) In stock and super efficient delivery.

Cheers again

Paul
