FCP with xdcam footage crashing
on Jun 18, 2012 at 12:28:24 pm

Hi all,

I know this is an issue that a lot of people are dealing with and I thought that someone may have some feedback over and above the troubleshooting I've already done.

I've got a FCP project (size ±30MB) containing ±15 hours of XD & prores footage. If the FCP "real mem" in the Activity Monitor goes over 2GB, it starts to lag, flicker green and then if real mem doesn't go down, it crashes.

I've tried:
- changing the timelines to pro res from xdcam
- software updates of Pro Applications 2010 02
- turning off waveforms and thumbnails
- clearing cache on my machine
- changing the still cache on the FCP system settings/memory cache
- reinstalling FCP

There's too much footage and too little disk space and time to transcode to pro res unfortunately.

Computer specs:
iMac, 3.4Ghz, quad core, i7, 8GB ram
and I'm using FCP 7.0.3

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks!

Amy

...and the cable connecting this drive to the computer is what kind? FW 800 at the very least?

Also: do you have multiple layers of video in the edit timeline?

Hi Dave,
Yes its FW800.
I've got maybe 4 to 5 layers of video.
I'm busy cutting the timeline down from an hour.
Thanks!
Amy

The connection is okay, but a single lacie drive won't be able to smoothly play back 4-5 layers of 35 mb/sec video. Think about all the work that single drive head has to do. You'll need a RAID.

I work with XDCAM stuff and I always recommend to edit native, but I think this is the typical scenario when converting to prores is convenient.
XDCAM is a LGOP codec, so to process one frame of your sequence, instead od managing 5 frames of footage (one per layer), FC needs to decompress 5 GOPs, so some 75 frames if you are in NTSC land. 60 if in PAL land.
Anyway, before converting, try if just changing your sequence codec for prores things works better.
Al that beside a faster HD.

Hello once more!

Wanted to check in on this issue.

I ended up converting to prores proxy but the crashes did not cease so I had to suck it up until the end of the project.

HOWEVER, I did not getting any crashes when working on my laptop which is half the speed but has Lion (my editing machine is on Snow Leopard, 8GB RAM, 3.4 Quad core. So it seems to be a software issue?

I'm on a new job, working with pro res 4444 media and I'm still having crashes. I reinstalled FCP yesterday but they still continue. For this job, I've been given a Lacie drive that has 800FW & USB 3.

Is it best to be working on USB 3?
And should I upgrade to Lion on my editing machine?

Regards,

Amy
