Convert 30fps to 29.97fps - Looks 'wobbly'
on Jun 4, 2012 at 7:19:11 pm

I have some footage I shot way back on the Canon T1i at 1280x720p 30fps. I am editing in HD ProRes at 29.97. I converted the 30fps footage in Compressor using the default ProRes droplet with changes to 1920x1080 and to 29.97. The compressed footage seems to play back 'wobbly' and as if the audio does not match the video. If I move through the footage frame by frame, no frames repeat.

I am using FCP6 on a MacBook Pro. I've had a few mild issues with other HD ProRes footage not being able to play back properly because of the graphics card, etc.

Did I do this conversion correctly?

If not, what did I miss?

Thank you kindly!

Rosie

Was the frame rate of the original footage actually 30fps? You can check by highlighting the footage in the FCP browser and looking under the frame rate column.

Yes, it is definitely 1280x720 at 30fps - not 29.97.

So I did this correctly?

Thank you kindly!

Okay, then when you did the Log & Transfer, did you transcode to ProRes? That's kind of unclear. If you didn't, I'd strongly recommend it. H.264 isn't good for FCP editing, even if it's in a ProRes timeline.

I converted the 1280x720 30fps H.264 footage in Compressor using the default ProRes droplet [specifying the aspect ratio to be 1920x1080 and the frame rate to be 29.97].

Then imported the clips in FCP.

Thanks.
