FCP7 Clamping Issue with ProRes HD 10bit
on May 22, 2012 at 2:20:42 am

Got an on-going issue while creating masters for broadcast.
I'm in FCP7 and my sequence is ProRes 422(HQ) 1080i 25fps. 10bit.
After adding filters for grading etc, I add the RGB Limit and set it to clamp from 0-100. After rendering, my external scopes tell me I have a variety of level issues, including Luma Lower and Gamut Lower or Upper on any of the the R, G or B channels. (Varies according to the shot.)
We don't seem to get these when working with our older timelines of DVCProHD. Clamping at 0-100 does exactly that.
We THINK that the clamping works correctly when we change to 8bit render with ProRes.

Does this problem strike a chord with anyone?

Regards,
Neil.

I never found the broadcast safe or RGB limit to be reliable post render, particularly in 10 bit.

If you are aggressive with RGB limit it can be OK. It particularly fails when text is positioned sub pixel. By sending a QT file through Color and rendering it you can get properly clamped black, white and chroma.

In FCP I use a free plugin from the guys at the Grading Sweet which seems to reliably clamp.-

Thanks for that Michael.
Seems the single plugin is no longer available. Seems it's wrapped in the Suite.
Do you know of any other download points for that plugin? I'd love to try it.
Cheers.

Ah! Download the free demo, and the free plug in is in that...
