Final Cut Pro 7 interaction with DVCPRO deck
on May 7, 2012 at 11:10:33 pm

I have a FIREWIRE PANASONIC DVCPRO AJ-D23OH and I'm running it directly in to my NEW MacBook Pro.

Final Cut Pro 7 is running.

The capture is not working.

Can someone please advise me?

Thank you. I appreciate it.

Did you choose the DV/NTSC Easy Setup? So that FCP knows what deck to look for?

Is this DVCPRO? Or DVCPRO 50? Panasonic did both...and they are slightly different.

Is the tape Standard Def? or is it HDV?

Is the tape you are trying to capture, something shot with a Panasonic DVCPRO camera? I think that there were some minor differences between DVCPRO and DV25.

I cannot get the deck to read on my computer period.

I changed the FIREWIRE cable. I powered the computer off. I powered the deck off. I am directly from the deck to the computer (no daisy chain).

Wonder if the firewire port is fried. That has been known to happen. Try on another computer...try to another firewire port.

Are you using a FW400 to FW800 adapter? Those have been known to cause issues too.

I just have the one MacBook. I switched the 400 to 800 and went to 400 to 400, but had to daisy chain a harddrive to my Macbook. The ports on the deck could be out.

Thanks for your support.

I have bad news for you, Anthony: Apple stopped supporting that deck years ago (I want to say around the time of FCP 5 or maybe 6) and I don't think it will ever work for you.

I was a confirmed FCP/DVCPro enthusiast, then I upgraded FCP and all of a sudden the deck stopped working. I tried every possible permutation of ports and cables and those cockamamie menu settings and re-booting and re-plugging but nothing worked. I asked around (as you have) but no one seemed to know.

I Finally started going through all the boilerplate documentation and, sure enough, I found a table somewhere of the hardware that Apple does support and my beloved 230H was conspicuously absence. Someone at Apple ultimately confirmed that it was a lost cause.

I was mad. How could they do that? It's a great piece of gear and I paid some big bucks for it. I ended up selling it to a buddy of mine who had an Avid and he was very happy with it but that did not eliminate the sting of getting screwed by Apple.

I hope for your sake that I'm wrong (but I'm not).
