Noisy Black on final BluRay??
on May 7, 2012 at 2:08:24 am

So I'm editing a project shot in 1080/60 on Sony DV tapes. Captured the footage using the Apple ProRes codec. Footage looks fine within FCP. After outputting some of the edited project to BluRay I'm noticing a lot of noise (artifacts) in the Blacks/Shadows.

Where does this noise come from and how can I fix it? (or at least improve the quality) I know this may not be an easy question and may require me to supply additional info so let me know what else you might need to know to help.

Jim

How does the footage look when you view it externally? Is the noise there?

I assume you mean straight off tape on a broadcast monitor correct? I do not have a broadcast monitor however if I view the tapes themselves on the same screen as the Bluray master, the tapes look much better than the BluRay. Some artifacts but not nearly as much as the bluray.

Your source is HDV which is quite noisy (even if you don't see the noise).
Recompression (H264) will add noise.
Try some Color Correction, crunching a bit the blacks and if you have some decent de-noise filter, apply it.

H.264 is the best codec to use for a Blu-Ray disc...
