QuickTime IMX50 & MXF
on Mar 30, 2012 at 9:13:54 am

Been asked to produce either QuickTime IMX50 (D-10/ IMX)files OR MXF files for online delivery. Do I have to get a Compressor plugin to enable a MXF file export or is the QuickTime IMX50 something I could just export out of Compressor? Also the encode profile says a 50MBPS MPeg-2 file at 50mbs GOP structure I-Picture only.
Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

You can export the IMX out of FC or Compressor without need or any plugin or component.
You should find an IMX.50 export option in QT and have an "Easy setup" for the IMX.50 in FC.

You can also use the Sony transfer software to make MXF files.

Thanks I saw that recently on another post whilst researching. I think I'll just export straight out of FCP and use the QuickTime conversion export function to export the IMX file. I think this will be easier and save more round tripping.

Thanks for the replies!

As long as they are cool with .mov, yeah.

Yes they specified either the IMX or MXF formats. The IMX they wanted in a QuickTime wrapper so all is good. Still might have a go at creating an MXF file though just so I know how to do it in the future.

thanks

It's good practice and the software is f-r-e-e.

Did the above with regards to easy setup and MPEG IMX 625/50 (50Mb/s) I also chose the size as PAL 720x576 16:9 but when I export that file and check its dimensions in Media Inspector it comes in at a 4:3 file

Can't understand why when I select the IMX 625/50 setting in QuickTime I lose the ability to select 16:9 anamorphic?

Use compressor instead of QuickTime as you can set the PAR for PAL 16:9 in the geometry tab.

720x576 is always 4x3, it's just pixels are arranged in a way that allows easy stretching to 16x9 on appropriate monitors. Is the current timeline setup as an anamorphic timeline?

You can always bring the resulting QT in to FCP and click the anamorphic flag if it isn't clicked already which will signify an anamorphic file.

Also, when making an MXF of this, you should be able to set the flag there as well.
