Apply flash effect in Wide Screen
on Mar 28, 2012 at 2:27:15 pm

Hi,

I'm editing a trailer where I use some camera-flash effects. Using dip to color.

However, it affects the ENTIRE screen, the black bars at the top and bottom since it's widescreen. I won't the flash effect ONLY to affect the picture itself not the black bars above and below.

How do?

Thanks in advance,
Daniel

Well, you can use a four point garbage matte to mask only the relevant part, but why are you using black bars to begin with? Just use a widescreen sequence

use the Too Much Too Soon flash frame transition plugin found here:
http://www.mattias.nu/plugins/

I also REALLY like the Impact flash found here:
http://www.filmimpact.net/index.php/plugins/

And yes, use a sequence that matches your footage dimensions.

All the material was converted to:

Apple ProRes (HQ), 1.280 x 720
Linear PCM, 32 bit big endian signed
integer, 48000 Hz, Mono

Sequence settings:

1280 x 720 (Aspect Ratio HDTV 720p (16:9)
Apple ProRess 422 (HQ)

Those are my settings at the moment, I still get the black bars in the top and bottom,
what am I doing wrong?

Also, do you know any other plugins good for a horror trailer?
Like inverted flashes and stuff?

I know these are possible with the effects already built in, but the transitions you linked were pretty good.

Select the footage in the time-line, and "Remove attributes: Basic motion + Distort.
