Changing colour outside of window
on Mar 6, 2012 at 10:32:49 pm

Ok, this is probably a stab in the dark as I have racked my brains and with my basic FCP knowledge I haven't found a way around this.

Basically I am shooting a short film in a pub which is supposed to be set at night. But due to permissions we can only shoot during the day. It is likely that the window will come into shot a few times and obviously, people will see it is light outside. So I am trying to find a way to darken the windows so that it looks like it is night time outside. I have tried using colour corrector and the droplet tool to select the light areas through the window but even when I darken these areas it still looks strange as there is too much scenery outside. Maybe pictures will help so I've attached someone.

I'm pretty sure what I'm after is nigh on impossible (unless we hang green screens outside of the windows), but if I've missed something then I would welcome any suggestions. Thanks.

Can you hang film on the windows/doors?
They make rolls of film material for this.

In post, sometimes you can create a black layer, crop it, layer it over the area, play with opacity/blend modes.

Hi Chris,

Do you know what this material is called? I've not heard of it. I did think of putting some sort of box over it but with the window frames and all I don't think that would really work.

Black drapes because keying out the light will look weird and most importantly the light source is from outside and will look wrong, like the reflections off the tables etc

Or if you're really on a budget black plastic sheeting.
