Starting a 7D/5D Edit on FCP - Convert to Apple Pro Res 422?
on Feb 23, 2012 at 11:38:48 pm

Looking for advice.

Editing in piece trying to decide on whether to edit on the MOV provided or transfer to ProRes> ?

Thoughts and any general advice on a 7D/5D workflow?

(Everything is synced).

Thanks CC Forum.

Absolutely, positively change to ProRes before editing with Final Cut Pro. A Google search will reveal multiple ways to get this done. ProRes422 LT is what you want unless you're going to be doing some steep color grading. 422 HQ is overkill for HDSLR footage.

I have a tutorial on the best way to do this. It covers pretty much all tapeless formats, including the Canon DSLRs.

actually i plan to desaturate and push up contrast?

but 422 is legit?

it is def worth the time/space for the results it provides.

I agree btw on LT vs. HQ - the HQ file sizes are insane.

However question: IF! I did want to create a DCP version of this short would HQ be worth it?

Cartoons and Cereal,

Thx

[Broggi Khaikin] "but 422 is legit?"

Yes. Used in broadcast editing every day, all over the world.

No. HQ gets you nothing but larger file sizes. It is meant for 10-bit acquisition formats like RED, Alexa, others. DSLR is 8-bit...ProRes 422, and LT are perfectly fine.

Thank you so much Shane.

Last favor:
Anything at the tip of your fingers on expert processes to desaturate DSLR footage?

Yeah...Colorista2 from RedGiantsoftware.com. Or you can use the 3-way Color Corrector, but Colorista is better, far more control.

You can get a whole lot of control in Color of contrast curves and desat. I use Color mostly and also use Colorista2. Color is more powerful but Colorista2 is good and a bit easier to drive.
