FCP 7 and FCP X compatibility
on Feb 13, 2012 at 10:11:53 pm

I have FCP 7 on my system and I am starting a project with a director who has FCP X - he'd like me to upgrade but I'm tentative after all I hear on X.
Is there a way to make 7 and X compatible....does the XML system work with these versions?

Thanks
Sherril

There's a new upgrade that works from final 7 to X.

Don't know if it works backwards.

There are two small application just released "Xto7" and "7toX") that allows to open (with some restrictions I think) project from any of both applications in the other.
Look in the App Store.

Not advisable to install FCPX on the same drive as FCS3. David Roth Weiss wrote an excellent tutorial on the better way to do this by partitioning your drive and installing a second bootable sector with Lion & FCPX on it.

The are issues with installing both version on the same drive so unless you are prepared to potential break a working FCP7 then read and consider.

An alternate approach is to install a second boot drive if you have spare space in a MacPro.
