HD clip not displaying correctly
on Feb 7, 2012 at 4:34:45 am

Not sure what I'm doing wrong...I exported a clip from FCP as an H.264 using Compressor. The clip opens up in QuickTime in a 1440x1080 display. My client wants me to convert the clip to MPEG-4. I bring the clip back into Compressor, set it for 100% of source, pixel aspect HD (1440x1080), convert it, but when I open the new file, it opens in MPEG Streamclip, but displays in a 4:3 mode (the image is stretched from top to bottom). I drag the clip into QuickTime 7 and same thing happens. I opened up other HD clips in MPEG Streamclip and they display properly. I'm now trying to see if exporting directly from the FCP timeline as an MPEG-4("send to Compressor") will solve the issue. Is there something I'm missing?

OK, now I'm even more confused. When I do a CMD-I to get info, the clip displays properly in the preview window. And it displays properly when I open it in QuickTIme 10.

Your sequence must be HDV or some other 1440 x 1080 codec. Export using QT Movie. Change the settings from current to ProRes 422 1920 x 1080. Now yoyu have a proper 16:9 square pixel file. Open Compressor and bring in this file and select mp4 output and chose the settings your client wants but always maintain 16:9 and square pixels.

Thanks for your quick response. Here are the sequence settings: 1440x1080, 29.97 fps, XDCAM HD 1080, pixel aspect HD (1440x1080). WIll try your suggestion now.

I tried exporting it from FCP as you suggested, but it looked like it would take awhile. So I took the previously exported clip back into MPEG Streamclip and set it to export at 1920x1080 (as you had suggested as well). It worked. Not sure why it wouldn't work at 1440x1080, but client needs this tomorrow morning, so I couldn't care less right now! THANK YOU!

Happy to help. 1440 x 1080 is 4:3 anamorphic which FCP interprets and displays as 16:9. You just have to make sure that you convert to 16:9 square pixels before converting into any other format so it will display correctly on a computer
