moviefiles: Canon 60D, audio: Canon XH-A1, HDV 50i, how to mix in FCP?

Hello,

I would like to know what I have to do to make moviefiles shot with a Canon 60D and
audiofiles shot with a Canon XH-A1 (HDV50i) compatible for working in the
same project in Final Cut.
First I figured maybe it is possible just know but perhaps not.

Hope there is anyone who has done this (or something similar) before!

Sara

Hey Sara

The 60D is shooting H.264 files that will not work well with FCP. You can either use compressor or another like program to transcode the files to the apple prores codec that FCP does like, and import those new files into your project. You can also download the Canon plug in to use FCP log and transfer tool to bring your footage in.

Not sure what the audio recorder format is but you want to bring your audio into FCP as 16 bit or 24 bit AIFF or WAV files that are 48k sample rate if they are not that already. You can use compressor for this as well.

Hi Chad,

Thanks for your response..
Someone explained to me just know the codec procces for prores so I will try that.
I quess after I've imported those files I will see wether I also have to do something else with
the audiofiles..I'll export a small bit to see what the result is and if something pops up...

you will be able to tell what type of file the audio is once it is in FCP. just look under the audio heading in the bin. Also the file name can be a dead giveaway. .mp3 aif wav etc will tell you.

Cheers

Canon DSLRs shoot H264 with uncompressed audio, 16 bit 48khz. If you have backed up the CF cards properly (ie: full card file structure) then Log & Transfer with the Canon plug in offers a more robust post path as you have the option to recapture files if you have corruption or a drive crash.

Shane Ross's excellent tutorial runs you through the correct workflow -

You may also want to convert the HDV to ProRes to simplify the timeline and reduce potential rendering, particulalry on long form or complex edit timelines.
