Apple Macbook Pro Running Slow! Final Cut Pro Playback and Rendering
on Jan 20, 2012 at 1:17:46 am

Hi,

I have had my macbook pro (2.8ghz, 4gb ram) for 2 years now which i regularly took to school
and use everyday.
When using Final Cut Pro my playback is jumpy and rendering seems to take longer then usual even if it's the only thing running!
I thinks it's from repeat abuse in my bag which is highly possible
Even when using vuze and downloading stuff in the background i struggle to watch movies using VCL without lag...

Can someone let me know what possible issues could it be and whether a simple HD replacement or broken part replacement would fix my problem or should i buy a new one? (last resort)

FCP likes playing back FCP friendly codecs (DV/DVCPro, DVCPro HD and all flavors of ProRes) from external Firewire 800 minimum hard drives.

Editing with h.264 and other long GOP (HDV) codecs really take a toll on playback.

Very unlikely. Learning the correct workflow makes life much easier for the editor.

Can't help you with non FCP related items. You'll have to go to the Genius Bar or email their support.

I haven't read if you're trying to edit without the benefit of an external FW 800 drive. Are you in fact trying to play back on the laptop's internal drive?

If this is what you're doing, this is bad practice. It may have worked for you in the past, but your footage may have been different than it is now (SD-HD) or it could be in an incorrect codec for FCP editing. It's a fact of life that hard drive get fragmented, making it tougher to get smooth playback. Finally there is the old maxim when editing in FCP: NEVER CAPTURE FOR FOOTAGE TO THE SYSTEM DRIVE.

As Steve eloquently puts it, "Learning the correct workflow makes life much easier for the editor."
