Export from AE as animation with transparency. I'm just learning AE myself. If you've got FCP 7 on your system you've got, one of the ProRes codecs (ProRes 444?) carries transparency as well.

Basically, add the comp to render que. Render out as pro res 4444 with RGB+Alpha. Trillions of colors plus.

I don't get it. Why on God's Green Earth do FCP editors in particular insist on rendering a chroma key with an alpha channel from AE? There is almost never a good reason to do that!

Folks, WAKE UP, willya?

As long as you're going to the bother of pulling a chroma key in AE, just do the entire flippin' shot in AE, foreground AND background! The shot's done! If you're paranoid about trimming, give yourself some handles on the clip in the first place! It's easy and takes no more time!

Then render in the codec of your FCP edit timeline. Or Prores 422, which is often a better idea.

I meant no offense to you personally.

It's a pet peeve of mine that all too many FCP editors think that if they normally put the background track below the chroma key track, they ALWAYS have to put the background in the track below.

Non taken ;-) I feel ya. There're plenty of pet peeves that I can relate on. I sure am loving working in AE though! The more I earn, the better it is.

That's ridiculous. The reason you'd want to pull out a matte channel pro res file would obviously be that you don't know the background, or the background will be reedited, or have 30 versions, or be edited somewhere they don't have AE. Maybe it goes over your WHOLE freakin' video that you're still editing. Mabye you want to move him around the screen to the beat of the music. The same reasons you would EVER render anything out with an alpha channel. To have choices and be an editor, not a compositor. Maybe he's going to sit with a client and choose backgrounds. I dunno. Why question? Ok, question, but don't badger.

Touché! Certainly reasons why you'd want to do it that way as well.

I converted all my footage into Apple Pro Res 422 (24 p, 1280 x 720) for use in FCP and want to export edited parts into After Effects.

This site always seems to have an answer when my brain freezes.

To export edited parts into AE, and retain the handles and use the original media, just go on over to automatic duck and download their expensive export/import plugins. Oh, wait, they're FREE!!!
