How do I add metadata to quicktime movies?
on Dec 14, 2011 at 7:44:13 am

Hi folks
Just going through the change from tape to file......!!!
The guys have come back from the field with a hard drive. They've imported the clips from the camera cards and converted them to .movs, nice and neat in bins - day1 camera1 etc with file names like D1C1001.
However I dont know what is on each clip...
The producer has given me a spreadsheet with details of the 9 day shoot.
I'd like to add a discription to each clip so it follows the file, firstly into FCP but then wherever else we send it. Is there a simple way to add a discription to the metadata of each file?

Many thanks!

I've not tried it myself, but I'd try it.

Thanks Jerry
Just gave it a go...
It seems to be designed with itunes in mind, with lots of columns like "rating", and none that match FCP except for "description", so I entered some text in that one. Imported the file to FCP and.... no text :(
So worth a try, and appreciate your suggestion, but on this occasion no success...!

Other ideas welcome... :)

Have you tried movie properties in Quicktime 7? (cmd+J)

It allows you to set multiple annotations for the different tracks (TC, Video, audio) or the media file itself. It's very powerful, although not incredibly efficient to do multiple files or batch...

Hi Jason
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
I'm trying to add information which will show up in the description or comments field so that at a later date it can be searched. However making an entry in the description field of QT7 as you described does not show up in FCP. The field remains empty....

I'm sure you haven't been waiting around for the answer for two years, but have you looked at Adobe Bridge? It allows you to both read and enter Metadata to your Quicktime .mov files.

Apple seems to have used their Metadata Schema more to keep users out, than to invite them in...but you can view this data, and add to it in Adobe Bridge. Right click on the file in Bridge, and choose File Info. You can then access all of the embedded data in the Advanced Tab, plus add your own custom Metadata, such as copyright info, shoot info, you name it...
