Looking to BUY Mac Pro, RAM, AJA LHi, Production Monitor, Speakers, Keyboards...
on Dec 14, 2011 at 12:49:50 am

Hello,

I'm looking to do some buying starting on Friday, 12/16/11 and ending on 12/31/11.

Specifically, I am looking to buy new/newer equipment to replace in my older edit suite in order to best run Final Cut Studio 3, Adobe Production Premium CS5.5 and Avid Media Composer 6. I already own all of these titles plus some other software and equipment that I can re-use.

Here is what I am looking to buy:
- Mac Pro 8-core (2010)
- Mac Pro 8-core (2010) RAM (12gb to 32gb)
- AJA LHi (for HD use with UVW-1800 Beta-SP and all three software)
- G-Tech ES Pro (8tb) with Atto R680 Mini-SAS card
- eSata card
- Sony LMD-2110W HDMI & analog production monitor
- Genelic 8020A speakers
- Avid keyboard
- Premier keyboard

Since I'm buying all of these out of my own pocket, of course I'm looking for the best prices and would even consider used or other pieces of equipment.

Any buying advice at all is greatly appreciated - thank you!
-Pat

Sooooo...you want us to be your personal shoppers?

B&H Photo is the first place to look. Although that Sony Monitor is currently out of stock...

Yea, personal shoppers if you don't mind, Shane!

I did see that monitor at B&H and it aught to fit into the budget for this year, anyway. Looks like it's fitting into a lot of other budgets, too, if they're sold out! I've found it at a few other places as well for not quite as low a price but at least still under a grand.

If anyone has any ideas of where to buy any of these things at good prices, or knows of who is selling any of this used, or knows of better equipment than what I have listed, or of a piece of gear that I haven't thought of, please do let me know. My eMail is below, too, if you'd prefer not to share your sources with the world.

Thanks again very much, Shane, and to everyone in advance,
-Pat

I had this bookmarked on eBay for awhile

http://www.ebay.com/itm/140612062473?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984...

If you're mainly using FCS, then this is the fastest Mac Pro at 3.33 Ghz Westmere. It's a 6 core, but FCP can't utilize them anyway. Motion and compressor can however, but still, you've got 6 cores for that. So if you're looking to buy something to run FCS until something better comes along, that's the way to go.

I decided to go with the iMac 3.4 GHZ i7, which would be faster for FCP (might be THE fastest mac for FCP) but certainly not for 64bit apps. In 64 bit realm it's the 10th fastest mac according to Geekbench. Not too shabby for a 4 core machine when the only machines faster are the 8+ Core Mac Pros and the one 6 core Mac Pro. 4 core Mac Pros are all slower than the i7s.

Or get Premiere and a Z800?
