FCP 7 and Lion
on Dec 13, 2011 at 7:24:50 am

After the hell I went through with FCP 6 and Lion, I bought FCP 7 from someone on ebay. Just like FCP 6, every attempt to use the program causes it to "quit unexpectedly." It's eerily similar. Either I bought a defective copy of FCP 7, the program is incompatible with Lion, or there's something I'm doing wrong. Help... Please.

Perform a clean install. This means backup your startup disk. Cloning is common for this using something like carbon copy cloner. (just google it) then install Lion on a nice empty drive. Update it all the way, then install Studio 2009. You'll not need to install FCP 6 first, you'll just need it's serial number, and the one for your FCP 7 install.

If you don't do this, you see all sorts of wierdness.

I've used FCP7 on two different systems (2008 MacPro, 2011 iMac) with Lion and it works *fine* in regards to not crashing or completely freaking out. Something is probably wrong at your end and I'd suggest doing with a the above poster stated - clean install from scratch with both Lion and FCS3.

I can't uninstall or reinstall Lion. It came with the computer without a disk. I took FCP 6 off my computer and then installed FCP 7. That's how I ended up with this.

You can reinstall MacOSX 10.7 on a new machine even if you didn't get a install disc.

Backing up everything and reinstalling is probably the best answer.

However, sometimes you just can't do that. It takes time, another hard drive, and knowledge of how to backup properly.

In this situation, I'd keep my eye on the system.log in the console app everytime Final Cut crashes. You probably have a plugin or something unsupported that isn't working. My guess is some sort of powerpc legacy something or other.

Then try to recreate the crash. If you can recreate the crash reliably, you can probably fix it without reinstalling.

Okay. I uninstalled every trace of Final Cut using an uninstaller. Made sure I got rid of all traces of Final Cut Pro 6. Then I reinstalled Final Cut Pro 7. That's what the Genius Bar suggested.

It's a different version of Final Cut with different disks. It's a brand new computer. And it's crashing exactly the same way it did before.

[Dave Lasdon] "Okay. I uninstalled every trace of Final Cut using an uninstaller. Made sure I got rid of all traces of Final Cut Pro 6. Then I reinstalled Final Cut Pro 7. That's what the Genius Bar suggested."

The so-called genius failed to tell you that uninstalling using one of the uninstall apps only works some of the time. A complete ground-up reinstall of both the OS and FCP is the only way to fix persistent issues such as the one(s) you're having.

The proper solution is to install both on a clean firewire drive, making sure to run all software updates on both, then boot and test. If that works, then you can clone the firewire drive to your system drive. This is the only reliable way to do the job Dave. And, for the record, the really smart Apple employees at the genius bar send people to this forum for tech support.

I have no doubt they do so and that the advice on here is great. I, however, am not that tech savvy and uninstalling the system is something I don't grasp. The Genius Bar, for all their faults, can actually work on my computer. Sadly, you all can't come to my office when I need help.

I'll tell ya David. Any more, an editor has to become a pretty savvy computer user. Don't have to know all of the IT, but a clean install is something everyone should understand how to do. Google is your friend. If you google "how do I cleanly install Lion". I'll bet 37 pages come up. I've not tried this, so put egg on my face and say there were only 34 or something... LOL

But seriously, you do need to be somewhat computer savvy to successfully run a stable NLE no matter whose we're talking about. FCP X makes it all easier I must say. Kudos for that at least. Face it, understanding what you work on is a must, right?

I'd need help with drill presses.

I purchased the FCP 7 off ebay and installed it. It didn't work. I went to the Apple Store and found out I bought the wrong computer. The right computer arrived from China today. So I'm backing up my old computer now and then will migrate and install FDCP 7.

I am going to do a clean install from my back-up disk, only installing my user information. I believe this means that my applications and my settings will not migrate. Can I transfer them individually to see if there's a conflict or should I just start anew? That'll mean buying some of the software that I purchased as a download. i.e. Quickbooks. I'm a little concerned about losing my settings, since I'm sure i'll lose something I count on.

Any final advice before I do all this.

Thanks,
David

Just purchased and iMac 2.5ghz i5 mid 2011 machine that shipped with Lion.
Was working on a Macbook Pro circa 2008 running Snow Leopard and just copied/ported my files, settings, and applications thru Wi-fi network to the new machine.

Now after reading your posts, I'm wondering if I should wipe and start again as my applications include Final Cut 6 and the CS4 Production Suite (after I updated the Java).
Final Cut 6 seems to be working, but I don't want to get into a project and find out the hard way that it's not. So I'm going to do some tests on FCP 6 and see if it snags or hiccups.

What are the bugs that folks see with this and will an upgrade to FCP 7 fix them (assuming I can find a copy now it's been terminated by Apple.) I'm also a little concerned that if I do a clean install and start again, installing FCP 6 from the discs, Lion won't recognize the them because there is no Rosetta software.

Any thoughts on this? Thanks.
g

It just won't open.

Yeah, you can trash the illegal software, call 1-800-Apple, and buy the freaking suite. Bet that will install just fine.

I don't understand the situation there. You have an unlicensed copy on a computer? or did you buy this license and can't find the registration papers or? If you buy a retail license from say e-bay and it's not FCP 7, it is upgradeable to FCP 7 by calling Apple at the number above.

I've worked with Adobe & Apple product for 25 years so I'm a bit of a dinosaur. Dinosaur-like I just kept whatever I was using on externals, never really worried about updating. I bought software personally in early years and it was purchased by ad agencies on my behalf in later years and installed often by others.

Last week my Macbook Pro was stolen and I bought a new one with Lion on it and now nothing works.
It's a world of serial numbers and registrations and I have learned that I'm not registered for much. Photoshop CS2 and Final Cut Pro 7 were my key tools, so I'm basically out of business until I come up with more money than I've just spent. I'm also hurting for Acrobat Pro, but that's only a couple hundred dollars.

Any advice?

Bruce

Learn FCP X?

It's gonna run just peachy on that new machine, and at 399 including Motion 5 and Compressor, seems to me to be a no brainer if you can get away from FCP 7...

I just read that FCP X is not backwards compatible with FCP 7 files. If that is correct and if
FCP 7 won't run on Lion I think I'll be changing machines. I can't run a business like this.
Is Apple nuts?

FCP 7 will run on Lion.

There are a couple of apps that will translate much of a sequence between FCP 7 and FCP X. They are Xto7 and 7toX. Both available in the apps store. (not expensive either).

I made a complete back up copy of my iMac, did a clean install of ML and reload my back up, made a software updates and everything work fine. FCP 7 as well as iTune, iMovie (will pass to iMovie "PRO"soon.. FCP X!) , mail, ...in fact, every apps I had work fine and if I had something to tell in 3 words I would say.....

FCPX:

Does it ship with the update that makes it backwards compatible with FCP7 files?
Does it import mini-DV files from a Sony FX-1?
Have spent 4 years working with FCP7, about how long will my learning curve be on FCPX?

Thx

It will import any media from DV to HD to PSD to whatever save RED files which is coming soon according to Apple. It will capture DV or HDV via firewire connections.
