Illegal File Name Error on Render
on Dec 8, 2011 at 6:13:01 am

Hi,

I'm trying to render my sequence and I continue to get the error, 'Illegal File Name.'

This is what I've tried so far to fix the error (with no success):

- restarted the computer
- created a new sequence and pasted the video
- renamed the sequence (several times - triple-checking to make sure there are no illegal characters)
- made sure the file isn't open any other way (restarted again to make sure)
- cleaned out the render cache
- made sure the "Limit Capture/Export File Segment Size" is unchecked
- renamed the entire project

The odd thing is that I rendered and exported 4 files from this project with no issues.

My process has been to copy the sequence, rename it, change out part of the video, render, export. It worked FOUR times and now I can't get out of this error.

I'm running Final Cut Pro 6.0.6
on
Mac OS X 10.5.8
2.66 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
3GB Memory

Suggestions??

Your name suggest you speak French.
In my experience French speaking people tend to use accents in file / folder names. This is generally a bad idea....

So check your mediafiles / folders for accents. If there are any, remove them. (And do the relink dance, post a video of that!)

As I mentioned, I checked the file names for illegal characters. I'm French, not dumb.

[Amy Lafleche] "As I mentioned, I checked the file names for illegal characters."

No, you did not mention that. You mentioned checking your sequence name, not media file names!

[Amy Lafleche] " I'm French, not dumb."

:-)

(do check your media file names, or do the 'divide and conquer' technique.)

All file names are fine.

And all foldernames as well?
Then, divide and conquer. Trash half your show and try again, repeat that etc...

You've not mentioned how you're exporting, nor which codec you're exporting to. I know you're not stupid Amy, so please don't be offended my question... There's a good reason I'm asking.

I'm not offended at all. I appreciate any help at this point!

I'm exporting to a Quick Time file using H.264 but I can't get to the export stage. Right now all I'm trying to do is render out the file.

Since I posted, I went back to one of the sequences that I had no problems rendering earlier, made a change, then tried Render All and got the same error.

I ended up just starting over for the sake of my sanity. ;-)

I created a new project, using the exact same files, names, settings, hard drives, etc.. and I was able to render this time.

I'm still interested in finding out why this would happen just in case it ever happens again down the road so if anyone has any ideas about it, let me know!!

Thanks for your help.

Now that I have managed to render the sequence, I'm getting the same error on exporting to Quick Time using H.264. I've tried exporting to several different hard drives with no success.

Any suggestions?

Have you trashed your FCP pref's?

I ended up creating a new project. Same files, same settings, and that worked.

I still don't understand what went wrong but I'm glad to have found a work-around.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions!
