Video becomes out of focus when adding new layers in FCP
on Nov 27, 2011 at 8:58:28 pm

Hi there,
I'm doing a green screen film. I've stacked 2 layers (the green screen image on top of the background)and used the chroma key effect. This video is fine but when I add another layer (a photograph) on top of these the green screen image goes out of focus. Its really annoying. I've had it before and somehow rectified it by stacking an opaque slug layer on top of everything but this isn't working this time.

Any ideas why this happens or how to stop it would be massively appreciated. Thank you in advance!
Tim

Is it completely rendered at 100%? Blend settings? Sequence settings? Codecs? I'm confused as to why a slug layer would actually fix this problem. More info please.

Hey,
So after working on this all day I left my computer for 30min and when i came back it had auto rendered and the image was no longer blurred!!! This hasn't fixed it in the past though (plus I had rendered it myself).
Its rendering in 8-bit YUV not RGB. would this make a difference?
Other info: its codec is apple intermediatry (sorry don't really understand codecs).
the video was shot on a panasonic hdc sd60 and using final cut pro 7
Whats Blend Settings?

AS its fixed at the moment don't worry about getting back to me on any of these questions but you're help is massively appreciated so thanks loads for getting back to me.
Tim

Glad it is fixed. I wouldn't use that codec, ProRes is far more efficient and best editing codec for FCP. Doing GS stuff requires as much information as possible, so the highest resolution codec would be optimal. Of course this depends on your system and whether it can handle the throughput. AT the very least, I would transcode from the original acquisition codec, whatever that camera does I don't know what it is, to Apple ProRes 422. HQ is optimal but requires at least 220 MB/s throughput, so 422 or even 422 LT should be fine.

Amazing what rendering can yield. Proper monitoring on a broadcast monitor helps too.
