Multiclip not not multicliping
on Nov 18, 2011 at 5:39:29 pm

I have a multiclip sequence set up and it is acting buggy.
Basically I put it in the timeline , hit play and start to edit.
I edit away until it just randomly stops then I try to hit play to edit again and it does not show all of the previews to edit from, just the main camera. So I then double click the clip (revealing all the cameras I am using) and make sure Open is selected . So I try to start editing again and it goes back to the main camera not allowing me to edit.

I have tried restarting Final Cut, and my computer several times and sometimes this fixes the problem and other times it does not.

I also ran preferences manager which fixed the problem but it came back.

Just for reference I am using version 6 and my machine has 2X 2.4 GHZ Processors and 24 GB of ram.

Any suggestions/solutions?
Thanks!

Where is the media stored? What hard drive? What connection? Playing a multiclip means you are playing back multiple streams of video at the same time. You need fast drives for that.

It is 7200 rpm 32 mb cache. It is one of the western digital "green" drives.
We are using connecting this through a hard drive toaster connected through esata.

What's the codec of the footage? You won't get more than 2 streams of ProRes 422 with a single SATA drive via eSATA. ANd if the footage is HQ...forget it.

Yea. I am going to try moving it to my system hard drive and see if that fixes the problem.
Thanks for the feedback!

[Ken Maxwell] " I am going to try moving it to my system hard drive and see if that fixes the problem."

NO! it won't. The system drive is still a SINGLE SATA drive. Often slower than media drives. And having footage on the system drive is always a bad idea. It is busy running the OS...that will cause worse dropped frames than the other drive.

You need a two-drive raid...or more. SEPARATE from system drive.

Or you need to do the multiclip thing using lower resolution proxy footage first, that's less taxing to your system, I'd expect. When the edit is locked, use media manager to replace all the proxy footage with the real deal.
