24p dslr and 30p XDCAM EX on same timeline, any setting suggestions ?
on Oct 20, 2011 at 1:41:16 pm

Hi ! I am editing a HD TV show in Canada. I have footage from Canon DSLR in 24p and 60i, Sony EX3 XDCAM EX in 24p and 30p, GoPro, and Nikon. My issue is the 30p footage on the 24p timeline, it's a bit jerky when panning... The delivery is a HDCAM in 29,97fps. What can I do about that and which sequence settings I should use to give my show the same look as most as possible (24p and 30p). Thanks !

It may be easier to down convert to 24p / vs. upconverting to 30p., but if you only have one cam at 24p, you may try converting it first to see your results. Convert it to XD Cam.

What NLE are you using?

Thanks !
Final Cut Pro 7 on a Mac Pro 2xQuad 2.26 16Gb RAM is my system.

Mainly, my shots are converted to ProRes 422 HQ, but the XDCAM files. So my timeline is ProRes HQ at 24fps. The broadcaster told me that some shots were jerky so I assume that it's the 29.97 shots on the 24p timeline. Since I don't have an external monitor, I'm kind of not sure what the final master will show well or not.

I just want to deliver a constant look so editing in 29.97 is not really an option because I would have interviews and visuals in 24p AND in 29.97...not great. So is there a way to make the 30p shots more smoother ?

Since you're delivering HDCAM 29.97 (1080i/59.94), I'd recommend editing in a ProRes 1080i/59.94 sequence. The 30p stuff will play back fine. For the 24p stuff, first convert it to 60i (59.94) with 3:2 pulldown using Compressor or AE, then bring it into the FCP sequence. Everything will then play back smoothly in the same sequence, and since you will already be in your delivery format, you can simply output to tape.

Thanks Alan ! But my issue is with the look...I don't want a portion of my show in 24p and the other in 30p... I know I should have shoot in just one format but there was different sources and some mistakes were made while I was not on the set...

You don't really have a choice at this point. Alan's suggestion is a good one. There may be inherent judder in your 24P footage if the camera moved too fast while panning. If that's the case you're probably stuck with it. If you find a copy of the American Cinematographer Manual look for recommended panning speeds. If you exceed those speeds (listed for frame rate and focal length over a 90 degree arc) judder will occur.

In fact, John, my problem is not the panning in the 24p footage but in the 29.97 dropped in the 24p timeline. I will try some filter and see.

Putting 29.97 into a 24p sequence is like trying to pound a square peg into a round hole - of course it's going to look terrible, especially if you're letting FCP do it. You will be far better off following my earlier suggestion and adding 3:2 pulldown to the 24p footage and editing in a 1080i60 sequence.. The difference between 24p and 30p when played back in 1080i60 with proper 3:2 pulldown on the 24p footage will be barely discernible. You'll see far more artifacts trying to conform 30p to 24p.

Ok for converting the 24p, but again, some footage with film look (24p) and some tv look (60i) in the same show is not what I want. But maybe what I want is too much ! Thanks again guys !!

[Kevin Larochelle] "some footage with film look (24p) and some tv look (60i) in the same show is not what I want. "

I can understand why you wouldn't want 60i and 24p together, as there would be an obvious difference between the filmic look of 24p/30p motion and the video look of 60i motion.

You could also use Compressor to convert the 60i footage to 30p, or even 24p with 3:2 pulldown, but 30p would be simpler.
