Adding Handles to FCP Exports?
on Oct 6, 2011 at 3:10:38 pm

Hello -

I have a sequence of clips that use a green screen background. I need to export the individual clips for my VFX artist. He asked for 5 frame handles on each clip.

There are about 50 clips.

I can't seem to find an export option that lets me use handles. What is the best way to do this?

Thank you in advance.

FCP's media manager does just what you're looking for. Do a search for how to use it, or dig up your manual. BTW, this is for FCP 6 / 7. Won't work on FCP X.

For some reason when I try to use media manager it just creates copies of the full raw clips.

I'll keep trying to mess with it.

Thanks for the response.

There is an option that you must first select in order for it to work. You can also choose how long the handles are.

Your footage must have REEL NUMBERS in order for the Media Manager to work properly.

I supposed my QuickTime files do not have timecode tracks and reel names.

Is there a workaround or a way to add timecode tracks and reel names?

I imported my media by dragging it into my browser. Should I be using a different method?

Thank you for the help.

[Jed Rosenberg] "Is there a workaround or a way to add timecode tracks and reel names?"

Well, it should have timecode. Load the clips into the VIEWER...see the timecode move? REEL numbers, yeah, you change them in FCP...in the browser.

[Jed Rosenberg] "I imported my media by dragging it into my browser. Should I be using a different method?"

Where did it come from? Did you convert it to an editing codec? or just use whatever format it was in? Because not all formats are good for editing, and the media manager cannot trim them.

Thanks Shane.

Okay - yes, it does have timecode, of course. I've been reading too many tutorials or something.

Okay - I see the reel number column in the browser. Will adding reel numbers affect my media? Is there any reason not to do this? Should I just give each clip a different reel number?

I shot on the 7D and then used MPEG Streamclip to convert the h.264 raw media to ProRes HQ and then used cinema tools to convert the specific slow motion shots to 23.98.

[Jed Rosenberg] " Will adding reel numbers affect my media?"

It will edit the metadata, adding a reel number.

[Jed Rosenberg] "Is there any reason not to do this?"

Nope...

[Jed Rosenberg] "Should I just give each clip a different reel number?"

Well, REALLY you should label all the clips that came from the same card as the same name as the one you gave the backup of that card. Each card backup should have a unique name so you can track it. Then all the footage from that card should have the same reel name, so that you know which footage came from which card.
