How do I use .SRT file in FCP to get subtitles?
on Sep 27, 2011 at 12:24:50 pm

Hi there. I was sent an .srt text file by a client and told I need to burn subtitles onto a feature they gave me. I have never done this before and have no idea what an .srt file is or how to use it in Final Cut to get subtitles.

Can anyone please explain as simple as possible? Reading about it not he Internet is confusing and I can't tell if I need some other application or not. Thank you.

You can use Michael Cinquin online tools for this.
Here is direct link to .srt to FCP workflow.

Hi Andrew, thanks for the reply. That link didn't work.

I actually found Title Exchange which works perfectly. But now, I was sent a revised srt file that is just gobbledygook along with an excel file with all the times and translations. How can I make that Excel file into a usable SRT file? Or, I guess, how do I make an SRT file at all? I don't have any subtitling software. THank you!

Here is the link: http://www.michaelcinquin.com/tools/subtitles/srt_to_fcp
For some reason it was broken in previous post...
I think there is also Excel workflow there: http://www.michaelcinquin.com/tools/subtitles/import_subtitle

You can format the excel file in a way that resembles an STL file.
Timecode comma timecode comma subtitle

Like this...
01:00:00:00 ,01:00:04:19 ,This is a sample subtitle|with 2 lines of text

The pipe '|' is the hard enter for two lines.

Getting that into text lines may take some doing, maybe manually on a case by case basis.

Then copy and paste the selected columns into a plain text file
And then use TEP to convert this as STL to XML.

You may have to add a set of header commands on font, size etc.

Thanks for all your help everyone, really appreciate it. I started going through the arduous process of copying and pasting the Excel sheet into my .srt file when I received a new and correct one from the client. From there it was easy to use Title Exchange.

Final SRT is a good choice on Mac App Store. Add SRT subtitles to Final Cut timeline.
