3TB drive only showing 2.2TB via Thermaltake BlacX Duet USB connection
on Sep 21, 2011 at 4:07:22 pm

...so i called Seagate (re: the Barracuda 7200rpm drive) and they said the bridge between the drive and the enclosure is the limiting factor, though some enclosures will allow the full 3TB. Do you guys know of any enclosures that allow this? If not, i guess i'll swap the 3TB for one of my internals and just know that i can't use more than 2TB with this enclosure. Bummer.

thanks for helping out a bonehead!

There's another fundamental issue to consider as well.

The title of your post indicates a USB connection, which can't sustain the bit rate necessary for editing in FCP. At minimum, you'd want a Firewire connection, which would work for SD video. Swapping the 3TB drive for one of the internal drives would be a temporary solution. I suspect you'd eventually want more storage.

Thanks, Dave, but no i'm not editing with this USB drive. It is for backup only, though i probably should be looking for an FW800-connected external anyway for a little more transfer speed. I'm moving stuff off the 3TB drive, will reformat it in 2 partitions and see if that works...

The BlacX Duet only supports drives up to 2tb. It says so on the box. There are some out there now that support up to 3tb drives, and very few that support 4tb drives. Google SATDOCKU3E if you need one that supports 4tb drives

Ya, thanks Mike. And a workaround is to put the 3TB drives in an internal slot, partition them so the partitions are all less than 2TB, take the drives out and then the Thermaltake works great with them.
