Hitachi releases 4Tb hard drives
on Sep 16, 2011 at 6:31:12 pm

In case you haven't seen it yet, Hitachi now has massive 4Tb hard drives on the market, and G-Tech has demoed a 2-drive Thunderbolt RAID with two of the new drives onboard. Sounds cool to me...

Here's the press release: http://news.creativecow.net/story/867138

It would be very nice to know what throughput we might expect out of these new devices, but unfortunately no one at Hitachi or G-Tech thought to include results from running the AJA Drive Test on the new G-Tech enclosure even though the press release was tailored to media pros.

I think there's a bit of a scare there... if you lose a drive, you lose a lot more data. I'd sure want to start looking at RAID 5 setups if you start using huge capacity drives. Amazing though. The first time I saw more than a gig in an array was a 3 gig array shown by Silicon Graphics at NAB. It was about the size of a small bedroom, and cost over 3 million bucks...
