Proper workflow for 1080p 24fps & 720p 60fps with Canon 60D
on Sep 2, 2011 at 8:49:17 pm

This weekend I am shooting a music video with my Canon 60D in primarily 1080p 24fps and doing some shots in 720p 60fps with slow-motion in mind.

I know that I am going to conform the 720p 60fps to 24fps, but since the major of my footage will be in 1080p, what should my FCP sequence settings be in 1080p or 720p? Also, should I make the 720p 60fps Pro Res 422 before or after I conform it to 24fps?

Thank You.

[Scott Silvia] "but since the major of my footage will be in 1080p, what should my FCP sequence settings be in 1080p or 720p?"

You answered your own question...1080p. The only 720p footage will be the slow motion...so scale that up to 1080 and you will be fine.

[Scott Silvia] "Also, should I make the 720p 60fps Pro Res 422 before or after I conform it to 24fps?"

Get Magic Bullet Grinder and it will convert, slow motion, and scale all in one go. Otherwise, I would use Log and Transfer to bring it in as ProRes, THEN conform it.

If I use Log and Transfer do I just take the 720 Pro Res file from my scratch disk and bring that into Cinema tools? Also, are 720 files automatically scaled to 1080 when dropped in a 1080 sequence?

[Scott Silvia] " If I use Log and Transfer do I just take the 720 Pro Res file from my scratch disk and bring that into Cinema tools?"

Yes. But know that this will modify the file...make it 23.98 and no longer 59.94. So FCP will lose the connection...but just bring the clips right back in. If you want to use some of this footage at normal speed, duplicate the clip before you Conform.

[Scott Silvia] "are 720 files automatically scaled to 1080 when dropped in a 1080 sequence?"

Yes they are.

Unless you uncheck that box in user prefs of course.
