Final Cut Sequence Settings for Blu Ray Slide Show
on Sep 2, 2011 at 5:06:24 pm

I will be making a Blu Ray slide show with high resolution TIFF files and music. I have found a lot of info on the best Compressor settings for creating the Blu Ray file, but less on the Final Cut settings. What is my best bet for the sequence settings in the Final Cut timeline?
Thanks,
Dave

1080 ProRes 422 or LT most likely... 29.97 if in the US... 25fps if in PAL land...

Check out Gee Three's PhotoMotion. It saves a lot of time when creating slide shows.

Jerry,
How does this look for the Sequence Settings?

Frame Size 1920 x 1080
Aspect Ratio HDTV 1080i (16:9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio HD (1280 x 1080)
Compressor Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)

iMac 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB
OS 10.6.2
Final Cut Pro 7.0

The pixel aspect ratio isn't right... should be square...

Just load the "sequence preset for ProRes HQ 1080... 30p might be just the ticket for a slide show too.

Keep in mind using ProRes HQ will yield very large render files.

Jerry,
There is no preset with that exact name.
Would it be this one?

Preset is called: ProRes 422 (HQ) 1920x1080 30p 48 kHz

and results in the sequence menu showing an aspect ratio of: HDTV 1080i (16:9)

Thanks again,
Dave

I would change the sequence to Progressive (NONE).
You are working with stills. No interlacing involved.

That brings up an interesting point.
The Blu Ray DVD will have 2 chapters - the 8 minute stills
montage and a 3-minute HDV interview.
I was going to build them in the same sequence
so I could create a single file to burn to Blu Ray disk.

So I guess the choices are to compromise the montage,
or compromise the interview, or build them in two
sequences. What do you think?

I'd capture the HDV as ProRes... make it match the sequence setting. So likely it should be 1080i 29.97. Then it would be all the same format.

makes sense

I only was not sure what Rafael meant about "Progressive" (not interlaced)

did not see a box for that in the sequence settings

Don't think there is one... but 30p, 24p are Progressive... it's what the "p" stands for. But if you're mixing the HDV with it, be sure that the HDV is progressively shot... it likely isn't. So if the images and the video are in the SAME sequence, it shouldn't be progressive. If they are in different sequences, use interlaced video for the interlaced HDV you have, and progressive for the stills.

again, this makes sense

so... do you think the photo montage section of the Blu Ray disk
will suffer in any noticeable way for not being edited in a
"progressive" sequence?

thanks again - very helpful

OK - I'm going with an interlaced sequence for the montage
and the HDV interview - so will all of the still pictures look
better if I de-interlace them?

Sorry to pile on the posts, but a bigger problem
just took over.

"Out of memory" error message while rendering. Will
not let me render.

I'm wondering if it has to do with my sequence settings.

The sequence preset gave me:

Frame Size 1920 x 1080
Aspect Ratio HDTV 1080i (16:9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio Square
Field Dominance None
Compressor ProRes 422 (HQ)

For what it's worth - I solved it
by using the H. 264 compressor in the
sequence settings.
