PP and mov's - match color?
on Aug 30, 2011 at 6:32:30 pm

Client wants to make several teaching sessions on how to learn, this is for schools...

What is the best delivery for them to be able to play their content live as well as online, which will incorporate video clips as well as standard simple animations...FLASH is too expensive for them, so we're trying powerpoint, but the video colors never match the power point's colors - they share the same color swatches, same graphic background - but when the mov is inserted and played in the powerpoint, the video clip is a bit washed out and lighter colors than the PP same background graphic.

Is PP the best way to do this and if so, is there a solution to getting the mov clips (exported out of FCP 7 as a master then QT PRO compressed to h264)) to match color with the PP?

Thanks
K

Kent,

Do a test that helps you to pinpoint the most simple adjustment possible to adjust your h.264 files so they will match what you'd like them match.

I would simply adjust the gamma filter in Compressor when encoding to h.264. Keep testing until you find the magic number that works every time and make sure to do the encoding to h.264 with that filter setting enabled and adjusted every time.

Thanks for reply - Funny you say that route as I did try that in QT PRO (not Compressor) - and played with the saturation, contrast brightness - but as you say it's pretty hit/miss - the purple color came out more blue

So outside of the adjustment to an h264 file, I guess there's no other way? Seems kind of hit/miss...anything we can do in FCP 7 to the settings of timeline for instance? Or is the real culprit the compression to h264 (probably)?

Thanks

[Kent Beeson] "Or is the real culprit the compression to h264 (probably)?"

A couple of years ago I went to a Matrox sponsored event to see their MAX h.264 encoding hardware in action. At the event, the "salesman" not only told us all how much faster encoding with MAX would be, he also told us that it would avoid the gamma shift typical when encoding to h.264.

NOT!!!

Sorry to say, but the gamma shift is still there, or at least it was last time I used my CompressHD card to encode h.264 files.

So, what does that tell you?

Thanks

Yes!

The gamma setting in Compressor is much more finely adjustable than the controls in QT Player. You'll also find that adjusting the gamma will make your color pop as well, since it brings your blacks back to where they belong.

Pro Media Tools from Digital Rebellion has a 'gamma detector' Not sure if it will help in this situation, but you could download a trial.

Most likely this has to do with the differing windows and Mac displays.
