Reference file plays audio not video in canvas
on Aug 30, 2011 at 12:46:26 am

Hi Forum,
You guys have never let me down before, so I figured I'd throw this one out.

-Shot with 5D
-Synced with Pluraleyes
-Exported Ref QT file of new synced footage
-Logged footage using Edit Markers
-Footage plays fine in the viewer, shows all my makers
-Edited footage into sequence,
-even though the render bar is green, footage in the sequence only audio plays...no video. (screen is black, it doesn't say needs render)
-if I render it fully then both audio & video play.

Is this because it's a reference file? Should I have exported them as self contained? Any thoughts?

Thanks
Ally

Self contained is so much safer. I presume you have also converted the codec to ProRes 422 for editing as H264 is not an edit codec for FCP7

Ally, instead of exporting QT files after syncing why don't you create merged clips?
I think its definitely a better way to preserve the integrity of the project in case there is any need for media management later.

Interesting idea. I always wondered, if you do an 'export video' self contained at the sequence settings, do you drop a generation? Is there any re-compression? While the merging idea is a great one...if I continue with the QT movies I've already made, and just archive those along with my project, I should be able to media manage and not drop any quality right?

I will try the merge clip idea as well. Sadly my audio person didn't stop and start the audio recorder with the camera, so many video takes need to be attached to one audio clip (which I have to then duplicate) and of course this means the new merged clip has huge head or tail of audio only. Not so much a problem as an inconvenience and a bit of a renaming and management issue.

any thoughts?

thanks
Ally

[Ally Shore] " I always wondered, if you do an 'export video' self contained at the sequence settings, do you drop a generation?"

No, so long as you don't check the "recompress all frames" checkbox.
