SD Beta-to-PAL ProRes...?? how?
on Aug 25, 2011 at 9:02:06 pm

Hi All
Russian client wants to go home from shoot with ProRes PAL files of our BetaSP NTSC-SD shoot.

presume Compressor is the way to go, but unsure of steps to take:

1) drop SD clip(s) into Compressor
2)convert to SD 8-bit Uncompressed PAL
3)convert THIS to Pro Res?

I don't seem to be seeing a direct "ProRes" PAL option in Compressor.

Specs:
FCP 7.0.3
Compressor 3.5.3
Betacam 8-bit Uncompressed

thanks!

[stu aull] "1) drop SD clip(s) into Compressor

Why to go 8bUnc?
Capture Prores NTSC, convert to Prores PAL in Compressor.

Good oportuniy o do it your self and learn something new.
720x576 CCIR-PAL pixels,25fps,Inelaced Upper first.

And search this forum for advice on best settings for frame controls in Compressor as the topic of standards conversion by software has been often discussed here.

so - I WILL check thru the archives then!

At least I now know it is POSSIBLE to make the conversion in Compressor.

Can anyone comment on the _quality_ of the conversion vs say Natress Conversion software? Which I hear is very good...
?

now to start digging...

Both should do it the similar.
Going NTSC to PAL is about re-scaling (720x480 to 720x576) and droppind some frames (30 to 25).
Compressor should be better doing the re-scaling (Frame Control ON, Scaling: BEST)
Dropping frames shoud be the same in both applications; BUT to get Compressor do his job, you need to set "Retiming: Lineal".
That's the option that will degrade your footage the less.
Don´t set "Frame Blending": No Frames to blend. Waist time.
Don´t set Optic Flow: You will end up with a fully processed synthetic picture.
Your best advicer is a short test (some picture with movement) with the different options.
