FCP XML into Redcine X FAIL - Can anyone heIp me out?
on Aug 25, 2011 at 5:33:13 pm

I have cut a film trailer (using proxies) in FCP 7. I exported an XML (version 5) and tried to import it into Redcine X. Redcine X asks me to double click to link original files. I do a couple and it doesn't autolink. If I then press ok, Redcine X just shuts off. EVERY TIME.

Can anyone help me out? I want to do a light grade before rendering out and sending for CC.

Thanks
J

I use clipfinder in the middle to relink to R3Ds.

Can you tell me how that works? I downloaded version 2.2 but can't decipher where to go after relinking.

You then export another XML that should open in RCX with files already relinked.

Is this timeline pretty basic? Like cuts only?

I have the pay version (2.5) so maybe there's a difference in the functionality.

Sorry, I don't mean to be dense (it just happens): I'm not really sure what I'm doing in this program. Conforming or importing? Ugh. Could you just hit me with a step by step after you have an FCP xml? Would be much appreciated.

Clipfinder? or RCX?

Clipfinder. I have the timeline output to a FCP xml. Now I want to get it into redcine x but going direct is failing. What do I do with Clipfinder to help me out?

Tools > Run Conform on FCP XML.

Choose your input XML.

Choose your output location/name XML.

Choose replace clips with R3D.

Choose a directory where your r3d files are.

Click Run Conform.

Seemed to work, but Redcine X still crashed when I clicked ok after opening the xml file.

Re-installing to see if that fixes it.

is this a simple cuts only timeline?

If not, make it one.

I thought so, but have found I left a couple of fades in and one layered clip. Simplifying. Will update shortly.

Dissolves usually come in OK (and when I say OK I mean they are ignored in RCX), def needs to be one layer, and no effects.

Ok, that didn't work. Is there an issue with the footage being spread over two drives? It links one drive fine and then when I manually connect another file and it goes on to relink it just shuts down.

I can open clips by browsing no problem, so Redcine X seems ok... Argh. This is frustrating.

What version of RCX? I guess the two drives could be a reason, but I'm not really sure on that.

See if you can create two separate XMLs with the footage from separate drives in each XML.

Although, when using clipfinder, the footage is already linked. I think something else is amiss here.

After linking the files in clipfinder, do I still use "open FCP xml" in RCX or is there another way of opening the new xml?

No you have to import the XML. Try pointing to the directory on the second drive.

Did you originally log and transfer the R3d files?

Not sure. I inherited the editing job. However, I manually relinked EVERY file that looked for the second drive and it worked. I'd hate to see it go like that for the whole feature.

Once graded in RCX, what's best to get it back into FCP for re-adding transitions and FX?

BTW, Thanks SO MUCH for hanging out here and helping me out. I REALLY appreciate it.

If you import the XML in a timeline, then grade, then you can export the graded XML after render, or reconnect the graded files in FCP.

You should look in to FCP Reconnect, it makes things easier.

Or use Color do do a grade/conform.

AWESOME new problem. I have to manually relink about 8 files and then it's fine. BUT... several of the clips are showing the wrong bit of the shot. Either a bit too far forward or back.

Eek. Running out of rope.

Yeah, seems like there might be something bonked with the tc/reel info.

How far off is it?

I would love to know how that footage got there in the first place.
