Big problems with Final Cut 7.03
on Aug 23, 2011 at 6:05:05 am

My Final Cut 7 started to act very wired when doing log and capturing from tape. It started the tape alright, but the pictured didn't update on the monitor and I got the beach ball when I tried to do capturing. I tried thrashing the preference file but it did not help.

Yesterday I formatted one of the hard drives in my Mac Pro. Installed 10.5. Updated that. Installed 10.6 on top. Updated that. Installed 10.7 on top of that. Updated that. Installed Final Cut Studio 3 from the dvd's updated that and tried to start Final Cut 7. First try was successful but when I tried to start it afterwards it crashes in the start up. I then check disc permissions on all discs. No problem found. I ran Apple hardware test. No problem found. At last I did a verify disc. It found problems on my 10.6 discs which was my main final cut disc and I repaired that. This has hopefully solved the problems I have with log and capture via Final Cut on that disc. I will check in a moment and give you the update.

My 1st question is has any of you experienced similar problems with Final Cut 7 when you have installed anything from the start with out doing any shortcuts.

My 2th question is can I start up on my 10.6 harddrive and use disc utilities to repair a 10.7 hard drive if
it has the same problem as my 10.6 hard drive. The last question is only of interest if log and capture works after I have repaired the 10.6 hard drive.

Sorry for the long story but I wanted to document what I had done to fix the problem my self.

Why don't you just do a clean install of 10.6. Never do an OS update over a previous OS. I'd wait on 10.7.

Hi Warren I did a clean install on A 10.7 that hand been installed on a freshly formatted Harddrive were I installed 10.5 then upgraded to 10.6 and then to 10.7 because Apple were saying that Final Cut studio would work on 10.7. I then installed Final Cut Studio and discovered that it did not work on my Mac Pro

I had a 10.6 disc that worked for quite a long time but it does not any more. I can read in this forum that 10.6.7 is the latest recommended version of 10.6 when running Final Cut Pro. That would explain the problems I have with 10.6 going bad. Problem is I have a 10.6.0 disc and the only upgrade of 10.6 is the 10.6.8 combo installer as far as I can see on Apples download site.

My solution thus far is to reinstall Final Cut Studio on my 10.5.8 Disk and that seem to work. I am crossing my fingers.

10.6.8 works flawlessly here. Systems run near 18 hours a day without problems.
