Best Workflow for Slow Motion
on Aug 22, 2011 at 10:18:09 am

Hi All,

I would just like some advice on the most efficient way to perform slow motion edits. I just bought a Canon 60D with the kit lens (EF-S 18-135mm). I understand that it is a good idea to shoot at 60fps when shooting with slow motion in mind. I also understand that Motion's "Optical Flow" feature is my best bet for great-looking slow motion. That is where my most important question inlays. Should I make all the edits for the entire project before performing slow motion treatment or apply all the slow motion treatment before I start editing? I understand that Final Cut X comes with "Optical Flow." Is it as good as motion was before Final Cut X?

If you guys could also give me some editing on exposure and shutter speed too that would be great.

Thanks.

Slow your clips first.
Make copies of them first.
Can use cinema tools to conform the clips to 24fps.
Edit in a 24p sequence.

Should I still film shots I do not plan to slow down at 24fps?

Correct.
By conforming the 59.94p shots to 23.976, they're already 2.5 times slower than the rest of the footage. Thus, you don't have to do extreme optical flow work in Motion, which runs the risk of image degradation.
