batch capture 3X for one clip?
on Aug 15, 2011 at 10:38:45 pm

hi. i'm still new to fcp but i'm observing odd behavior that has me scratching my head. i often batch capture form tape via serial deck control and sdi for audio and video using a decklink extreme and a sony hvr-1500. if i am batch capturing a clip that has video and two audio clips, fcp 7.03 does three separate passes on the tape. apparently, it is digitizing video and each audio track as a separate quicktime. why in the world doesn't it do it in one pass? is there a way that i can get it to do it in one pass? thx, josh

Look in your scratch disk settings. There is an option to capture audio and video to separate files. If you don't want it that way, uncheck the box.

thanks, it's a nice thought but the box isn't checked.

i noticed something else. when i check the properties of the clip, it says "merged clip". i brought this clip into the system as an aaf import using automatic duck. i'm wondering, if that has anything to do with it.

The audio in the clip isn't from that tape. It's likely from another recording device and then sync'd to the video. It was merged with a different file...

thanks, jerry. in a sense you are right. i contacted automatic duck support. fcp thinks the media isn't from the same tape because i'm importing an embedded aaf file. i was doing that so that i would have an audio-visual reference in low rez of the cut before i redigitized it in fcp. apparently, the trick is to import the aaf without the media and then redigitize. i'll try it tomorrow and post any issues that come up.
from automatic duck support:
Merged clips are created when you have "use existing media" enabled. If you are recapturing you should import with this option Turned Off. That will create offline non-merged clips for your digitizing pleasure.

yup, works. be sure to export the aaf from the avid without embedded media.
