How do I connect an external computer monitor to my iMac to use as a client Monitor for Final Cut Pro 7?

Any tips for would be greatly appreciated.

You don't. Not unless it is a very specific iMac:

You need a display port adapter to which ever connection your monitor uses (vga, dvi). In final cut: view -> video playback. Or you could use external video, which uses firewire through a dv camera. Hook the camera up to a tv using rca cables.

I just saw a product announcement that breaks out the thunderbolt port to two HDMI ports....think it was apple branded, so maybe look into that.
