Final cut pro load up crash - project file size TOO BIG!
on Aug 6, 2011 at 9:52:36 pm

Just some useful information for all the FCP users out there cause I just found a solution that took me and a bunch of experts a week to fix:

I have a massive FCP project file - 180mb!
Anyway, it seems once the file got bigger than 180mb it started to crash on load up.
I tried everything and spent an entire week trying to find the problem. In the end, by splitting the project into two project files solves my problem and it loads fine.

So if your project file is very big and its starting to choke up when loading it, split it in two and that will solve your problem. Seems I reached FCP's limit....

To split it in two:
Disconnect your external drive/the drive with all your media.
Duplicate your project file.
Open one, delete half the files save it.
Open the other one, delete the other half of the files.
Reconnect your drive.
Open both project files and it will work.

Hope I can save people some time because it's been driving me mad and I tried everything in the book (and this is not in 'the book).

This is pretty well known by people who work with large amounts of footage in FCP.
Luckily, you can have more than one project open at a time.

FCPX has an entirely different project structure, so if it ever becomes a viable replacement in professional workflows, you won't have to worry about such things.
