What is the difference between plain and matrix audio?
on Jul 16, 2011 at 1:45:26 am

I shoot in 1080p AVCHD with an HMC-150. When I import audio, my choices are either plain stereo or matrix. What is the difference between the two exactly? I've looked online but not really found an answer to the question.

Not sure about that camera specifically but generally matrix means multiple channels of audio embedded in a single data stream. This is how Dolby ac3 files are and many others like DTS Mpeg2 etc.

FCP can only work properly with uncompressed PCM 16 or 24 bit @ 48khz. I suggest you select stereo and see what the files are when converted into quicktimes in a codec that FCP can use.
