FCP 6 frequent crashing, no error message
on Jul 7, 2011 at 5:11:18 pm

Hi there,

I've been experiencing a problem with FCP 6, I'm hoping to get some advice. I'm editing with FCP 6 and experiencing very frequent crashing without any error messages. I usually have a couple projects open that are between 50 - 120 mb, with one of those being 120 mb and the others being around 50 or 60 mb.

Here are the stats.

Mac OS X v 10.5.8

Processor: 2 X 2.26 GHZ Quad Core Intel Xeon

Memory: 8 GB 1066 MHZ DDR3

FCP v 6.0.6

Drives: HD One Cal Digit drives 10 TB.

Thanks for any advice!

What's the codec of the footage?

You should also know that those are monster-huge-gigantic project file sizes, with which there are known issues. You should try to break the projects up into smaller pieces, resulting in smaller project file sizes. Think 30 mb maximum.

A response of "I can't do that with these projects" will almost surely result in continued crashing, so you'd better figure out a way to do it.

Thanks! Yes, we knew that about the project file size, but needed someone to scold us first. :)
Codec: XDCAM EX 1080i60 (35mb/s vbr) 29.97 fps

Well, consider yourself scolded; it's time to make those project files smaller.

And although I'm not a big fan of XDCam, it shouldn't prove to be the problem.
My one admonition: if your final edit requires any kind of rendering in FCP, duplicate the edit timeline, change the codec to ProRes 422, and render away. Since XDCam gets lossy once past the acquisition stage, you'll be doing yourself a big favor.

Thanks for the advice about the codec issue. We'll keep that in mind if making the projects smaller doesn't seem to be the solution.
Another related question: if we break up the projects so that they're 30 mb, how many of those can we have open at once? Just one?

I'd say it would be tough to keep multiple 30 mb files open. They tend to grow as you work on them.

I start to worry if I have multiple 5 mb project files open. Lots of spinning beach balls when I do.
