fcp lacie big4 raid speed

Hello,

Ill try to make this short. Have a project that is delivered to me as a 960x720p 59.94 uncompressed 8 bit quicktime. The data stream required to play it is 664 Mbit/s which converts to 83MB/s. According to the AJA System test our Lacie Big4 Raid 5 can handle 250MB/s which to me seems more than enough to handle the 83MB/s stream. We have a really fast mac pro with 6 gigs of ram and final cut seems to choke on this file. It drops frames like crazy. When I play it on the desktop it doesnt seem to drop frames, obviously there is no warning of it in quicktime but at least visually it doesnt look like it is. Final cut seems to be setup correctly within the audio video settings. Last week I had to convert the file to prores HQ but the client doesnt want to have to do this because he is afraid of compression quality loss (I dont want to start that argument). Any suggestions of why the Raid cannot handle the file? Are there other factors that I am not realizing when calculating the throughput, or maybe im missing something in final cut. Thanks for your help.

It could be a RAM issue OR is your RAID hooked up to eSATA or firewire?

The Raid is hooked up through esata and all 6 gigs of ram have a status of "OK".

Well from my perspective when I see 6GB of RAM that's not much and that "could" be your problem. One my main work stations I have 32GB of Ram and run 2 RAID 5's both with eSATA. One of the RAID's is a 4TB tower with 8 - 500GB drives and it can push 595MB/s (very fast) and the other is a new 12TB, RAID 5 that can push about 240MB/s.

I have not ever had any problems with my system like what you described. Even though I boot my system in 64bit, I have not upgraded AE, FCP to 64 bit simple because I have a ton of money invested in 3rd party plugin software in 32 bit.

So my 2 cents is it may very well be RAM. RAM is very important as you know, especially when pushing large files.

Hope that helps.
