New Proapps QT Codecs1.0
on Jun 26, 2011 at 6:15:22 pm

Apple recommends the new ProApps update to FCX and MOTION.5 and Compressor4, however at MacUpdate, they say "..video codecs to be used by QT-based applications".
Any idea on the convenience of installing this?
The installation package says nothing.

What exactly do you want to know? I installed them on 10.7. They coexist along with fcp 7. So far so good. 10.6.8 keeps reminding me to install them but I kinda ignore them since I'm not gonna run fcpx on 10.6.8.

I'm asking if the codecs should be installed for FCS3.

If you are planning on running FCS3 for awhile, would freeze your working system is right now. No more updates to it. Ever.

Test new software on a clone, but you knew that already, ;)

Rafael,

As you already know they have nothing to do with fcs 3.

Beware 10.6.8
on Jun 27, 2011 at 2:22:35 am

According to new posts today at Adobe the latest Snow Leopard 10.6.8 update has apparently broken Premiere's Mercury Playback Engine running on NVidia's Cuda cards. So, be careful.

Thanks David. My system is now frozen and will be cloned just in case. Updates are now off. The next move is most likely CS5 so I can stay with Color.

When I read the OS upgrade was "to assist with apps store to buy FCP X".. I declined. I knew Apple would do me no favours as they seem to be determined to force us all to FCP X, but I am suspicious that this 'upgrade' also broke the most desirable competitors main advantage.

I'm not talking about any system install.
What I'm talking about is call "ProApps Codec Update".
That is a simple QT update and shouldn't affect the system at all.
The most, could affect those codecs updated.

Apple has been very clever releasing FCX before LIon.
This way skips giving any kind of support to FC.7 on the new system.

Hi
Presumably it gives you ProRes etc (which came with FCP 7) if you have no installation of FCS 3?

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1396
This update adds the following video codecs for use by QuickTime-based applications:
Apple Intermediate Codec
Apple ProRes
AVC-Intra
DVCPRO HD
HDV
XDCAM HD / EX / HD422
MPEG IMX
Uncompressed 4:2:2

This is supposed to be an update for FCX.
Codecs should be different than the installed with FCX (unless FCX installed no codecs), otherwise, why to update?
So they may be different versions than the codecs we are using in FCP.7/QT.7.
Not sure. I will try to see if they show a different software version.

I agree that it probably won't do any harm to the system, but why chance it?

There are no more chances to install FCS3 fresh ever again at least from Apple software update.

Yikes - I hadn't considered this - what happens if I have a disc crash - I can re- instal snow and FCP7 - but will apple still update FCP to the current version, FCP 7.0.3?

Anyone got a standalone updater!

Ken.

That's what I alluded to earlier. Freeze your system and clone it. Now. No more system updates to that disk. Ever.

Just checked on the apple site, they still have pro applications update 2010-02 available. It's a 310 MB download and I assume it will update FCP studio 3 to the following:

Final Cut Pro 7.0.3
Motion 4.0.3
Color 1.5.3
Compressor 3.5.3
Apple Qmaster 3.5.3

I'm downloading now!

Best,

Ken.

Everything still available in Apple Downloads.
Time to save everything.

BTW Jeremy, in which direction is your company moving, after FCX's release?

[Rafael Amador] "Everything still available in Apple Downloads."

This must have been restored as they were not available last week.

[Rafael Amador] "BTW Jeremy, in which direction is your company moving, after FCX's release?"

Still up in the air. We are not reacting one way or another quite yet. There's a lot that intrigues me about FCPx, mainly the keyword organization which will help me a lot. We obviously can't use it as it stands today, but that doesn't worry me a whole lot.

My instincts tell me to wait until Lion, and then wait six months.

If we had to jump ship today, it would be Adobe as it's basically FCP with no Color and understands FCP7's XML architecture. Also, out of the whole Adobe Production suite, the only program I am unfamiliar with is PPro. I think it would be a relatively easy switch.

As of now, though, we are being patient. Thanks for asking.

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,
Soon I will need to look for a new option, and my choice, will be very much based on the experiences and opinion of a few guys like you, Shane, David, etc.
I'm not pressed, but I don't gonna wait till the last moment. In the other hand, I need something new to keep learning and updated.

I hear you. It's a little confusing at the moment.

At least the updates were made available if we ever need to reinstall FCS3 and Snow Leopard from scratch again. This will buy us a bit more time to think it all over, try and test new workflows and wait for any news.

FC.5 updates still available and I think Apple will keep the FCS2/3 stuff available for long.
We may don't buy FCX, but Apple will prefer us working on FC.7, than shifting to PP or AVID, and of course, the worst for them: Buying a PC.
They have no much to win on that, but upsetting people.
But with iApple, who knows?
