Audio going crazy! Loud popping crackling
on Jun 16, 2011 at 9:36:01 am

I've just imported a project from FCP 5 to FCP 7. Everything was going fine until...

A very loud crackling and popping sound appeared during playback and scrubbing. It sounds like its going to make the speakers explode! The audio then cuts out and the volume can't be altered. In fact regardless of the volume set, the crackling and popping is full volume!

Is anyone able to tell me why this is happening? A reboot 'fixes' the audio so that I can at least use other programmes.

Thanks in advance.
Jamie

Do you have a I/O card or device installed, such as Matrox, AJA, or Decklink?

Or are you using a USB connected audio board?

I have a system, it has stuff in it, and stuff hooked to it. I have a camera, it can record stuff. I read the manuals, and know how to use this stuff and lots of other stuff too.
You should be suitably impressed...

Hi guys,

The only device installed is my external Lacie Drive.

There is no external audio hardware.

It's scary the hell out of me when I am happily editing away, it suddenly blasts out. It's a really painful noise.

  • Replace any compressed audio -- mp3, ac3, etc -- with aiff files at 48 kHz, 16 or 24 bits. This includes the audio tracks of any video: it too must be aiff, 48kHz, 16/24.
  • Open the Render Manager, and delete ALL the audio renders.
  • Save & close the project, and shut down the computer.
  • Go have a cup of coffee or go heed any Call Of Nature.
  • Start the computer up and open the project.
  • Re-render audio if necessary: do a Select All, then hit Option-r.

Did it do the trick? No? It's time to trash your preferences.

Wow thanks for the feedback.

So that's what I get for upgrading from 5 to 7? A whole bunch of work?!

Blimey.

Thanks again
Jamie

Although I'm not allowed to do upgrading -- my station's engineering department does that -- I have read and have been told that HOW you do the upgrade makes all the difference in the world.

The recommended, no-repercussions way to do it:
  • Make a copy of your current system drive on an external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner.
  • Delete everything on your current system drive.
  • Install the OS from the OS installation disk and run the updater SEVERAL times.
  • Install Final Cut Suite -- with the exception of Quicktime X -- and run the updater SEVERAL times.

So you did YOU do it?

Thanks Ben. I haven't had time to look at the problem since.

Cheers
Jamie
