H.264/MPEG-4 codec

I am trying to import a file from a Samsung SC-HMX10C HD Camcorder into Final Cut Pro 6.0.5. It has a H.264/MPEG-4 codec. How would I do this? It's giving me an error message.

Search the forum for "H.264." We say daily that H.264 is not an editing codec. You must convert to ProRes. MPEG Streamclip does this, and it's free.

Thanks. Would that conversion affect in anyway syncing the video to an audio file captured from a zoom h4n?

Might actually help it. FCP doesn't like H.264s for editing...

Use MPEG Streamclip (google it: free) to convert it ProRes 422 for use in FCP.

We may have to change our stock answers next week, supposedly in FCPx this will no longer be an isue:-)

Hmmmm... MAYBE FCP X will fix that. Personally, I think it'll still contain some pretty fundamental and as-yet undiscovered bugs that will need attention.

I'm not singling out Apple here, I'm getting the notion that a LOT of software development companies are consciously bringing products to market earlier than they would have in the past on the backs of an entirely new group of Beta Testers called Early Adopters.
