Log & Transfer P2 to RS422 not happening
on Jun 1, 2011 at 6:33:15 pm

Although I choose in the preferences pull down of the Log & Transfer window to import as RS 422 (proxy, HQ, doesn't matter) or Apple Intermediate the transfer happens and the file I get is Apple AVC-Intra 100M 1080i60.
Easy set up, etc.... all set to RS422. I deleted FCP preferences numerous times and it still happens. I inherited this system to work on & I WAS able to do this about 14 days ago - so I know it can be done. Do I need to re-intall the program? Is it a plug in? I checked with AJA and they said it was a FCP problem. Any clues appreciated.

I take it you mean ProRes 422 and not RS-422' which is a serial data protocol used for Deck control.

What are the specs of the system you inherited?

Yes. Pro Res 422. Running latest version of FCP (7.1.6 I think) on Mac Pro - Snow Leopard. As I said - it worked a few weeks ago. We have had numerous drive problems to troubleshoot lately, but with the problem external drives gone it still refuses to log & transfer any codec except AVC.

There is absolutely no reason to transcode P2 to ProRes. That's why the option is not available in L & T.

I'd like to hear more. As I said - I inherited this system and all previous projects were converted to Pro Res. I'm new to working with P2. I assumed it captured the clips at a high quality, but smaller files and it was easier to edit.

Why is there no reason to transcode P2 to ProRes?

It's a waste of time. P2 @ DVCPro HD is a great codec.

HDV to ProRes is another story.

But having recently had to integrate a whole lot of P2 material into a larger ProRes job, it would have saved a lot of time being able to transcode it directly as ProRes rather than having to do it all as a Compressor batch job later.
